One thing that my city certainly needs more of is cars. Not just any vehicles, but cars specifically. I have plenty of trucks and and SUVs and entirely too many police/fire things. It seems like Lego rarely releases sets that are simply cars.
In 2019, Lego held a contest to design a vintage car. This entry, titled Aedelsten Deluxe, was the chosen as the winner by fan vote and was given away starting this January 1st as a gift with purchase over $85. Hurray, new car!
As a side note, the runners-up are all absolutely fantastic, and I would love to see them released in a similar fashion. Or, better yet, put them all in a single set called "Vintage Cars". I would buy a baker's dozen of them.
So here it is -- the 40448 Ideas Vintage Car. The set largely holds true to its original design, although had some minor modifications, and all of the chrome pieces were replaced with light bluish grey. It is based on some sort of 50's American car, this set looks fantastic cast in teal. The use of the surfboards to represent the door panels is very creative use of the the piece. The invert windshield is also quite interesting, and looks better in its application than I expected.
One criticism though -- while the surfboard piece usage is quite creative, it somewhat ruins the play value of this set. The piece is (barely) held on by a single pin on the backside of the surfboard, which is attached to a bracket. If you sneeze in the same zip code as this set, that surfboard will fall off. As such, it is not entirely possible to pick this set up without the sides falling off. If you ever find one of these in a haul, I would expect both of the door panels to be missing.
In spite of the loose surfboard part, this is easily one of my favorite gift with purchase sets because it is highly practical for my city, and looks great right in front of the Downtown Diner with it's complementary color scheme.
